NOT SCHOOL! LET THEM DRIVE
“Children learn from anything and everything they see. They learn wherever they are, not just in special learning places.” ~John Holt
I want Kail’s education to be passion based, play based, and project based. He knows where he wants to go. I’m just along to help him create his map.
Kail doesn’t go to school because, I don’t want him sitting in front of a talking head for 7+ hours a day. I don’t want him hiding under a desk for active shooter drills or being a victim of an actual school shooting. I don’t want him to finally find something the teacher is saying to be intriguing and then have the subject abruptly changed. I don’t want my kid raising his hand because he has to go potty. I don’t want him starting gender studies or any sex education in elementary school. We will handle those questions as they come up naturally. I don’t want Kail moved away from his friend because he is talking. I don’t want my little guy getting “bad grades” because his Mama believes that homework is ridiculous after having been trapped in school all day already. I don’t want to get arrested for truancy because my child takes too many family trips.
We send adults to prison against their will for committing crimes. We send children to what often feels like a prison against their will because we’ve been conditioned to believe that school is the only place they learn.
Having cared for so many young ones, I see how school affects them. I see children begging and crying not to have to go before school. I see the attitudes, grumpiness, and the way some lash out when they come home.
It’s disheartening to see so many children passionately involved in something, being abruptly shut down for homework or other scheduled activities. What they are working on doesn’t seem important enough to the adults. It is important to them. When they are mesmerized by something, they are learning.
The “top rated” traditional schools are “top rated” because of test scores. Everything is geared towards testing to defend the schools ratings.
Even the most prestigious Montessori, Waldorf, or other kind of special schools (including accredited schools without testing) follow a formula. Some formulas are better than others. I want my guy to make his own.
It’s all learning! 🌎
